SBI codes will change in September 2025 – Check your details now

Every company or organisation registered in the KVK Business Register has one or more SBI codes. These codes describe your business activities. From 5 to 7 September 2025, KVK will update many SBI codes.

Before this update, make sure that the description of your activities in the Business Register is correct. This ensures that your company or organisation will be assigned the right SBI code(s).

What is an SBI code?

An SBI code (Standard Industrial Classification) is a 4- or 5-digit number that shows what a company does. Each separate business activity is linked to a unique code.

The SBI code list is managed by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). You can find a complete overview of all SBI codes (in Dutch) on their website.

Why are SBI codes changing?

SBI codes are updated roughly every 15 years at the European level. This update reflects changes in the economy:

  • New activities arise (for example, sustainability services, online platforms, and comparison sites).

  • Old activities disappear (such as video rental stores).

  • Codes are aligned with European standards for better international comparison and reporting.

Some codes will also get an extra digit, ensuring all codes have 5 digits. For example, the separate codes for online and physical retail will be merged into one code.

What are the risks of an incorrect SBI code?

If your activities are described incorrectly, your SBI code(s) may not reflect your actual business. This can cause problems, as SBI codes are used by:

  • Government bodies to determine subsidies,

  • Pension funds to check compulsory schemes,

  • Banks when reviewing loan applications,

  • Insurers to calculate your premium.

Having the wrong SBI code may mean missed opportunities or unnecessary risks.

How to check and update your SBI code?

  • Log in to 'Mijn KvK' with DigiD.
  • Review your activity description and update it if needed.
  • You may also suggest an SBI code yourself.
  • KvK will review and assign the correct code(s).

Please note! Updates to your business activities must be made in Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch, use an online translation tool.

Example of upcoming changes

  • Current 4-digit codes will be extended to 5 digits.
  • Online and physical retail will be merged into one code.

  • New codes will be added, such as for online intermediaries and brokers.
